Overall dimensions are only the start
Length and width provide a starting point. Connection positions, holes, interfaces with other materials and the way the part will be used all influence fabrication. Even a dimensioned sketch can make a discussion clearer than a verbal description alone.
Describe the operating conditions
Explain whether the part is for indoor or outdoor use, whether it is fixed or mobile, how it will be moved and how it will be cleaned. Material and surface options are considered alongside these conditions. Two parts that look similar may require different details for different uses.
Quantity and repeat orders
A single component and a batch may need different preparation and production plans. State the initial quantity and whether repeat orders are expected. When comparing quotes, check that the scope is the same: does it include finishing, packaging, delivery and installation?
If you do not have a drawing
A photograph, existing sample or hand-drawn sketch with dimensions can start the discussion. Explain any hidden areas and where measurements were taken. Agreeing final production dimensions before fabrication reduces misunderstandings.
